The Seattle Art Museum and Decibel Festival Team Up for SAM REMIX at the Olympic Sculpture Park

SAMRemixThe Seattle electronic music and digital arts festival will curate a very special stage at the Olympic Sculpture Park on August 7th.

SEATTLE, Washington (July 16, 2009) – Sean Horton, Executive Director and Curator of the Decibel Festival announced Thursday that they will be teaming up with the Seattle Art Museum for what promises to be the most elaborate SAM REMIX event to date.

On Friday, August 7th at the Olympic Sculpture Park, Decibel will put together a stage that will feature four internationally renowned artists: Filastine (Barcelona), Rena Jones (Portland) and local heroes Lusine & DJ Collage. Each will be performing live electronic music that bridges the gap between technology and culture. The stage will feature interactive projections and digital art by some of Seattle’s most respected digital video artist, including The Sight Below, who just returned back to his Emerald City home from a successful seven-week European tour.

“We are thrilled to partner with Decibel for this special SAM REMIX event,” said Sandra Jackson Dumont, SAM’s Deputy Director of Education and Public Programs and Adjunct Curator. “They have curated an incredible line-up of electronic music artists that consider visual culture in their performances.  Decibel’s contribution to this SAM REMIX is bound to make it one of the most talked about moments at the Olympic Sculpture Park.”

This REMIX event marks the beginning of a creative partnership between Decibel Festival and the Seattle Art Museum, which will continue during the festival’s 6th edition the weekend of September 24 – 27th.

ARTISTS’ INFORMATION FOR THE DECIBEL STAGE
——————————————————————————-

:: FILASTINE ::
Soot Records – Barcelona
http://www.filastine.com

Barcelona-resident Filastine has been a part of the hammering rhythm section of tribal-rock/performance troupe ¡Tchkung!, conceiver and founding member of radical marching band Infernal Noise Brigade, and, most recently, a sweat-inducing club DJ and composer of wildly diverse and dirty laptop music. In short, he has spent his artistic life heretofore straddling the line between unrelentingly political statement and action, and the lost-in-music euphoria of the broadest possible definition of pop music. His new proper debut, Burn It (on kindred avant spirit DJ /rupture’s UK-based Soot Records), steams with juddering hip hop/modern R&B rhythms, South American breaks, North African trance, and a grip of vocal and instrumental contributors from every corner of the world.

A voracious traveler and student of various global music genres, he has studied with Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, spent weeks at the feet of the Master Musicians of Jajouka, and dug deep into the ancient-to-the-future music of Brazil. Like many great producers, Filastine is also a great instrumentalist, and his years of rhythmic study lend depth to both his recordings and visceral live performance.

“Reminiscent of the murky drama of Ninja Tuners like Amon Tobin and DJ Food…feels like a thrillingly tense interaction between these ideological factors and the gold-toothed, whip-riding luxury of hip hop culture” – The Stranger

:: RENA JONES ::
Native State Records – Portland
http://www.renamusic.com

Rena Jones slips through the veils of defined sound, weaving cello, violin, woodwinds, Rhodes, electronics and sound design through unique instrumentation. Her most recent album ‘Driftwood’ was given the honorof the sixth most essential albums of 2006 on NPR ‘Echoes’ radio show. Her extensive background in music and sound covers a colorful spectrum from award winning video games “Dance Dance Revolution and Karaoke Revolution” and for various films as a sound editor, sound designer and composer.

Jones’ live sets are a potent sonic session. She orchestrates her violin over handcrafted beats melding the organic with the electronic. Her performance is a sophisticated example of the modern movement in electronic dance and ambient music. Multiple tours around North America and Europe have lead Rena to perform at some of the world’s most established cutting edge electronic music festivals; The Glade Festival (UK), Shambhala Music Festival (Canada) and Burning Man (USA). Rena Jones has released tracks with such reputable international labels as Iboga, Spun Records, Aleph Zero and Native State Records. Currently, Rena is in the studio working on her fourth solo album, which will feature the New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago.

:: LUSINE ::
Ghostly International – Seattle

Jeff McIlwain’s ever morphing musical project, Lusine, has been in existence for over 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff now resides in Seattle. In 1998, he attended CalArts to study 20th century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out a self-titled release with Isophlux. Since then, he has been releasing his music on various labels including Ann Arbor’s respected Ghostly International, Hymen, and U-Cover. His latest release, Language Barrier, was somewhat of a departure, focusing less on rhythmic detail, instead highlighting the layers of ambience that were only briefly touched upon in past releases. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to several labels including Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult for various compilations and remix releases. He has performed around the US and abroad including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient performance and collaboration with video artist Scott Sunn at Seattle’s Triple Door in April. Jeff has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s “Snow Angels” (with Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, 2008), and scoring the film “Linewatch” (dir. Kevin Bray, 2009; with Cuba Gooding Jr., Omari Hardwick) He is currently putting the finishing touches on an upcoming album and taking a break after an impressive international tour schedule, which included performances at three of the world’s most prestigious electronic music festivals (DEMF, MUTEK and Sónar).
