For the first installment of OPTICAL, Decibel will be hosting live performances from three artists that bridge the gap between ambient, shoegaze and electonica. The beautiful Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya was provide an ideal seated environment in which to experience these audio/visual performances.
Tycho is the music project of San Francisco artist and producer Scott Hansen. As Tycho, Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend into the horizon. Known in the design world as ISO50, Hansen is famed for his bucolic, sun-drenched design style, which serves as a backdrop and mirror for his musical output.
Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, friends since their middle school days. The duo were brought together by mutual artistic and musical interests, and both ended up at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was during this time that they began exchanging musical ideas and compositions which led to them founding the Apestaartje label in 1999. As their collaborations and individual projects blossomed, they decided to create Mountains as a vehicle for live performance. With 3 albums under their belt, their sound is sublime and hypnotic.
Simon Scott is the ex slowdive drummer (“just for a day” lp and “souvlaki” lp) who runs the KESH recording label from Cambridge and is also in Seavault (with A.Ryan from Isan) on Morr Music. He has collaborated with Brian Eno, The Sight Below, Machinefabriek, Jasper TX, Nils Frahm, Emmanuele Errante, Svarte Greiner and Rafael Anton Irisarri.
