++++ ARTIST BIOS ++++
:::: THOMAS FEHLMANN BIO ::::
Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Thomas Fehlmann first entered the professional music world after a meeting with Robert Fripp in 1979 at the Art academy in Hamburg. In 1980 he formed the post-pop band Palais Schaumburg with Holger Hiller. Fehlmann started to work on his own in 1985. After moving to Berlin and experimenting with sample technique and tapes, he became a producer and remixer for various artists.
Meeting Alex Paterson in 1989 was a crucial turning point in his career, and he began working with ambient band The Orb. Fehlmann went on to record on 24 or the 25 Orb albums and have a major hand in crafting the groups sound.
Thomas was also involved in forging the Berlin / Detroit techno alliance and assisted in the introduction of techno originators Kevin Saunderson and Underground Resistance to Germany. He also formed the 3MB Team (along with Moritz Von Oswald), producing a series of works for Tresor with Detroit DJs Juan Atkins, Eddie “Flashin’” Fowlks and Blake Baxter.
Now that his work with The Orb has earned him a place in electronic music history, Fehlmann is afforded the artistic license to transcend all previous boundaries. His musicality and experimentalist drive converge with exceptional grace and system-bumpin’ appeal. Granular hip-hop grooves and exotic chord structures interface with bold, synthetic finesse, while his housier inner child locks down some precision dance-floor cuts immersed in fluidly manipulated filtration.
As a solo artist, Fehlmann released several Ambient LPs on Apollo/R&S before becoming a regular on Cologne’s Kompakt label for his own brand of dub influenced techno and tech house. Fehlmann’s 6th solo full length album titled “Gute Luft” will be coming out this March on Kompakt.
Fehlmann is one of the most beloved artists in the dB international roster over. We take great pride in bring him back this April.
:::: LUSINE BIO ::::
Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International (home to 2004’s landmark Serial Hodgepodge as well as its successful followup remix album Podgelism), Hymen, and U-Cover. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to various compilations and remix releases on Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult. His Language Barrier full-length on Hymen Records was something of a departure, as McIlwain focused less on jagged rhythmic detail and more on the layers of ambience that lay beneath the percussion of his previous releases.
McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film Snow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).
McIlwain’s 2009 release, A Certain Distance, has gone on to become his best reviewed and best selling album to date. In addition, 2009 has brought Lusine several high profile festival performances, including DEMF, MUTEK, Sonar and the Decibel Festival.
:::: SHEN BIO ::::
Taken from the arcane Taoist term for ‘refined energy’ or ‘depth’, Shen is Noah Pred’s outlet for low-tempo explorations of forward-thinking computer music. Drawing inspiration from the Eastern aesthetics of botanical architecture and geomantic techniques, Shen attempts to evoke organic structures through lush ecologies of synthetic chords, deep textures and minimalist machinations. Honing his craft through sets performed alongside the likes of Monolake, Deadbeat, Shulman, Lusine, Bluetech and Solar Fields, his unique interpretation of the downtempo genre rapidly evolved into a distinctly recognizable sound. Incorporating elements of electro, dub and minimal techno, Shen’s fluid funk is aimed equally at the public thrill of the dancefloor and the internal transcendence of headphones. With tracks appearing on the acclaimed ‘Leftcoast Liquid Vol. 1′, ‘Floating Point 3′ and various Green Samurai Clan compilations, the debut Shen full-length, ‘Outlines’, was released in December 2006 on Native State Records.
