Room40 is a label and multi-arts organization based in Brisbane, Australia. Since 2000, Room40 has published over 70 uniquely packaged editions and multiples in the fields of electronics, improvisation, experimental-pop and sound-art. Curated by Lawrence English, the label continues to publish in and around the margins of each of these fields, drawing on a diverse roster of both established and emergent sound-makers. Room40 also produces numerous events, festivals and exhibitions in Australia and beyond.
Artists such as Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Tujiko Noriko, Oren Ambarchi, Chris Abrahams, Richard Chartier, Taylor Deupree, Christopher Willits, Greg Davis, among dozens of others, have released or formed part of the Room40 extended family.
The label has been widely recognized and praised, with features in numerous magazines (The Wire,
XLR8R, Pitchfork, MCD, DE:Bug etc) and books including a number of renowned design journals. Pitchfork described Room40 as “the foremost purveyor of experimental music in the Southern Hemisphere,” calling the label’s editions “total fetish property…it just looks like something you’d want to have sitting on your shelf”.
Room40 is presenting in 2010 a series of special live events in Australia, UK, Europe, Japan and the USA that brings together a selection of the artists who have worked with the label over the past 10 years.
Decibel Festival, in collaboration with Open Frame Festival (UK/AU), the Australian Council For The Arts, and Queensland Government, is proud to host the Seattle installment – an edition featuring the likes of Ben Frost, Lawrence English, Grouper, and Seattle’s own Rafael Anton Irisarri.
