The Miasmah imprint was founded by Erik Skovdin in 2006 as "not only a record and design studio, but more of a small cultural institution for inspirational and atmospherical outputs in diverse forms'' and along with partner Otto Totland as Deaf Center, they are themselves the ideal expression of this manifesto. Mixing environmental field recordings, electronics and acoustic instrumentation into muted surrealist narratives, the sound of this Norwegian duo is one that is highly visual, yet verging on being outside easy metaphorical grasp. Not entirely ambient music in the strictest sense, their sound is punctuated by intervals of suppressed unease, disquietly evocative in its use of suggestive musical silhouettes and landscapes spun in low-lit nocturnal hues, such as
those that inhabit their critically acclaimed Type Records release Pale Ravine.
