Carl Craig is one of the most lauded techno producers to come out of Detroit's "second wave," beginning his production career under the tutelage of Derrick May. Craig's output over the years has stretched the boundaries of the genre, deftly incorporating jazz with Innerzone Orchestra (and inspiring the nascent drum and bass scene with 1992's "Bug in the Bassbin"), jazz and hip hop with the Detroit Experiment, while still producing and remixing under a number of his own production aliases (69, BFC, Psyche, Trés Demented, and more), and running the illustrious Planet E label. In 2000, he founded the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, which has become one of the most respected music festivals in the world, and annual techno Mecca for many. In 2008 he triumphantly returned to the DEMF, headlining the main stage with an epic appearance complemented by live synths, keyboards, and saxophone from jazz legend Wendell Harrison. In 2007 he gained wide recognition outside of techno circles for his remix of Junior Boys' "Like a Child," earning a Grammy nomination. One of Carl Craig's most recent releases, Sessions, collects tracks from throughout his lengthy discography, a career retrospective for an artist who remains not only relevant, but firmly in his prime.
Craig will be headlining this year's Decibel Festival, Saturday night at Neumos.
