Due to my role with the festival, I get the privilege of experiencing just about every single performance we offer. This year holds what for me is just about the most exciting lineup to date, and my recommendations for aural delicacies are as follows:
Wednesday
The DnB showcase will my main event. There’s just something about half-stepping the beats that really hits something within. Local DJ Grym always delivers, and Total Science and the Hive are ridiculous. Even if you’re more a 4 to the floor type enthusiast, I’d still give an ear to this event.
Thursday
This one is tough. WHY OH WHY MUST WE CHOOSE? The obvious choice? Amon Tobin at the Paramount (alongside Baths and Tokimonsta). As a video producer, I’m incredibly excited to see what all the buzz surrounding Tobin’s ground breaking ISAM is all about. BUT!!!! There’s also Ladytron at Showbox Market AND Opuio and Bonobo at Neumos! On top of that, local techno/deep house DJ Ctrl_Alt_Dlt is kicking off the Sweatbox Showcase at the Woods. Sweatbox, out of all the local promoters, is, in my humble opinion, second to none for the deeper side of things. I have gone to many, many of their events, and am never disappointed. My suggestion? Buy a dB pass and have plenty of cab fare and see them all!
Friday
Moby. Moby. Moby. Moby. Moby. This man defines electronica for my generation, and this will be my first chance to see him live. I’m also stoked to catch Cyanwave for the hundredth time at Neumos. You can never get enough of them, and closing out that showcase is Martyn, one of my all time favorite DJs.
Saturday
Can you say Boat Party? The Uniting Souls crew are putting this one together, and it was truly one my favorite times last year. I’ll unabashedly admit to an almost unhealthy obsession with house, and when you combine local DJ Ramiro with local producers Pezzner and Lawnchair Generals, and throw in some Jordan Strong, blend over ice with tequila and a day on the water in the most beautiful city in the US, you have a guaranteed wicked time. If boats and house aren’t your thing, the dB in the Park at renowned Volunteer Park will also give you plenty of grooving in the daytime. Evening wise, I can’t wait to follow Green Velvet into La La Land at Neumos.
Sunday
Hands down my all time favorite producer is returning to Seattle for the dB in Dub Finale. Gaudi, world music and dub producer is performing at Neumos, and if you missed his set at Nectar Lounge in October, he will deliver unto thee a phenomenal mix of DJing and live production like you’ve never seen (CD-Js, keyboards, Korg effectors, and a theremin!). I drove 100 miles just to see him last year, and I would have made like the Proclaimers and driven 100 more. And, to round out my dB experience, I’m going to hit up the always solid Flammable Showcase at Re-Bar. And then? After parties to stretch out the experience and enjoy every. last. second.
