Toro Y Moi’s 2011 album Underneath the Pine, saw the artist emerging as a psychedelic soul quartet with a brilliant live show. This change in direction has made Toro Y Moi one of the most talked about live acts of the year and the album’s wide critical acclaimed (“Best new music” on Pitchfork) has made them college music darlings. Fat Possum Records Psyche rockers Unknown Mortal Orchesta and Bass Drum of Death will be opening.

Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Columbia, South Carolina native and resident Chaz Bundick. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design at The University of South Carolina, Chaz decided to push his music further now that he has more time on his hands. Chaz Bundick’s methods are constantly changing and evolving. Heavily influenced by his parent’s vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk.

Ruban Nielson is a New Zealand native who had transplanted to Portland with his band Mint Chicks. Out of the home studio, Ruban is joined by local Portland producer Jake Portrait on bass and teenage prodigy Julien Ehrich on drums. They have been on the road all year with their intoxicating sound of alien beatnik pop music that echoes 60s psychedelia and krautrock minimalism with just a hint of gentle weirdness that suggested its roots might equally lie in the verdant indie of the equally distant New Zealand scene.

Bass Drum of Death is a band from Mississippi with John on vocals and guitar with Colin playing the drums. John wrote and recorded the whole record himself using just a drumset, a guitar, a usb microphone, a computer, and a shitload of talent. The songs are about drugs, trying to make it with religious girls, panic attacks, stealing stuff, mild to severe depression, Elvis appearing in your dreams and giving you advice, gravity bongs and the devil living inside your brain.

For fans of Shuggie Otis, Animal Collective, Can and The Black Keys.
