For over two decades, techno, house and electro have set the tone for underground electronic dance music globally. From Chicago House, to Detroit Techno, to New York electro, DJs and producers have been championing underground dance music through warehouse parties, clubs and festivals, that pull in international audiences eager to lose themselves in the music. Today, Paris, London, Berlin and Barcelona represent global hubs for techno, house and electro, all of which have evolved substantially since their inception in the 80s. More than any other artist, Green Velvet has remained an instrumental and enigmatic figure across all three genres, influencing an entirely new generation of artists, including co-headliner Designer Drugs, whose more aggressive approach to techno and electro have gained them a loyal audience.
After nearly 50 remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey to Annie to Thieves Like Us, the diverse electronic group Designer Drugs, comprised of Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, celebrate their debut album release HARDCORE/SOFTCORE. Where past productions and remixes have been on the poppier end of the musical spectrum, HARDCORE conjures up a darker, edgier vibe (think the throbbing, industrial-heavy opening club scene in “The Doom Generation”) yet still retains a melodic center on many of the tracks.
Change has been a constant theme throughout the successful career of Green Velvet, but as he has crossed genres, explored themes from the comedic to the serious and changed monikers, the common thread running through the music he has made for nearly two decades is its roots in and dedication to the Chicago House sound. Numerous side projects and remixes under various names had added to his seemingly nonstop musical output since his first release under the moniker Cajmere in 1991. The much sought-after Jaguar Skills has an impressive history that features residencies in Ibiza, creator of mixtape “1979-2006: A Hip-Hop Odysseey – 800 Tracks in 45 Minutes”, which has been downloaded over 1 million times, and concurrent appearances at Bestival.
