As part of the DRUMCELL + CPU PROJECT, visual programmer and VJ Bryant Place a.k.a. CyberPatrolUnit (CPU) is creating generative audio-reactive visuals with Derivative’s TouchDesigner software. Together, CPU and Drumcell create a live, software-based performance where audio and visual stimuli are woven together into one interactive performance. In a recent demo, the line between sound and vision was invariably blurred as both eyes and ears were engaged in a dynamic, ongoing dialogue. This meeting of the audio and video tribes isn’t just that of a VJ using specialized mixer technology to sync pre-recorded bits to the beat. Instead, the elements of a DRUMCELL + CPU PROJECT show are unique to that performance, creating an immersive live experience for the audience.
CPU has worked with luminaries such as M.I.A., Kanye West and renowned film composer, Hans Zimmer. In addition to his high profile VJ work as part of Vello Virkhaus’ Vsquared team, performing for many major musical acts of the day, CPU works with the underground SoCal techno crew Droid Behavior, for whom he has developed highly specialized audio-visualization systems. In addition, CPU is also an artist relations manager, support and product specialist at JazzMutant (creators of the famed touchscreen controller Lemur.) Recently CPU toured with Richie Hawtin’s PlastikmanLive show in Europe where he ran the visual system.
CPU is an expert in the development and implementation of seamless real-time media systems. As an expert of MIDI tracking, editing, and synchronization, he is also skilled in the emerging network-based protocol OpenSoundControl, and is one of the few Touch Designer programmers in the world.
