3pm : WORKSHOP 7 : “Beat Production in Ableton Live” hosted by lead Ableton clinician Huston Singletary and featuring Alpha Pup recording artists Take (Los Angeles) and Nosaj Thing (Los Angeles).
Electronic music would be nothing without a beat to carry it. For this workshop Huston Singletary will be talking with Alpha Pup artists Nosaj Thing and TAKE on their process for creating beats in Ableton Live.
About the hosts:
Huston Singletary is Ableton’s worldwide lead clinician and US trainer for Live. He also works as one of Ableton’s sound designers and can be found conducting tutorials and instructional videos on Ableton’s official YouTube channel. In addition to conducting workshops and clinics for Ableton in both the US and internationally, Huston also co-coordinates the Ableton Live certification events on top of a steady regiment of workshops and events at educational institutions and dealers. Apart from his instructional and demo work, Huston has over 15 years of studio recording and production experience with multiple DAW platforms.
As the electronic music world lifts an interested eyebrow towards the West Coast’s burgeoning “Beat Scene,” Take aka Sweatson Klank has risen to the top as one of the new generation’s finest producers. In a musical landscape that is quickly becoming overcrowded, Take fuses his own brand of future-flung electronics with elements of avant-garde jazz, subharmonic melodies and a mean hip hop bounce. A multi-instrumentalist and frequency fanatic with ten years of releases and live performance experience, Take’s formula is ever-evolving and his productions clearly sprinkled with his unique sonic vocabulary. Constantly growing, Take uses engaging melodies, non-linear development and a multi-strata slump to communicate a fresh feeling of movement in every track. Embracing his geographic legacy in the thriving LA experimental beat community but still very much his own player, Take makes music that charts its own course through a gurgling fuzz of rich layers and textures. His sound has always been about pushing forward, breaking ground and laying a new path for producers to walk.
After cutting his teeth by making music on various archaic computers and programs in his early years, Nosaj Thing is now, without a doubt, among L.A.’s finest musical modulators. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener’s mind as deeply as he hits their soul. Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a gifted noise constructor.
His debut album Drift was released by Alpha Pup in June 2009 to unanimous global acclaim. Pitchfork awarded an excellent 7.9 rating, calling the album “gorgeously haunted… sonic Easter Eggs for a thousand listens.” The album peaked at 5 on the iTunes Electronic chart, and went all the way to 1 on Bleep and Boomkat. The success of Drift led to Nosaj Thing being featured in magazines such as Spin, Fader, XLR8R, The New Yorker, Nylon and URB. He has received regular airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Los Angeles’ KCRW, while his engaging live set has made him a staple of the worldwide underground touring circuit.
