Timeboy is an audio/visual project founded by the Los Angeles electronic composer John King who now resides in Portland. The named is derived from a fictional Japanese superhero sparsely hinted to in Masaaki Yuasa’s anime masterpiece Mindgame. In the film, the superhero possesses the power to control the flow of time. Utilizing a magical clock-contraption attached to his belt, Timeboy manipulates time to arrive at the scene of a crime before it even happens. In essence, the superhero was divine intervention at its purest form.
Both Timeboys share a unique similarity: They both utilize contraptions to bend, warp and shape the world around them. As Arthur C. Clark once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”, Timeboy uses cutting-edge technologies to bring a unique and hypnotic, psychedelic Audio/Visual experience.
As a VJ, Timeboy works closely with Flying Lotus’ net-label Brainfeeder as well as other west-coast collectives such as Low End Theory, Pure Filth, Dropping Gems, World Famous and Abstract Earth Project.
“I’d say my art is heavily psychedelic. I like to think of it as hypnotic with an allure that entices dream-states or altered perceptions. My life goal is to build a machine that perfectly transposes the sights and sounds in my head into a physical medium” – Timeboy
