Roman Fluegel and Joern Elling Wuttke came together as a production team in the late `80`s after both collected valuable music experience from previously being in various bands. 1993 together with the Djs ATA and Heiko MSO, they established three labels, Ongaku, Klang Elektronik, and Playhouse.
They released several maxi singles and an album under the pseudonym Acid Jesus, and later changed their name to Alter Ego. The following year they founded Sensorama, an outlet for their more ambient tracks. Their earlier productions as Alter Ego were on Sven Vaeth’s Harthouse label, which was at that time one of the most pioneering labels in Germany. After a series of successful releases that included remixes by key producers such as Black Dog, Luke Slater, Andrew Weatherall’s Two Lone Swordsmen project, Matthew Herbert, and David Holmes, the duo began performing at prominent festivals around the world, attracting international attention.
In 1997, the two decided to concentrate on further productions for their own label, Klang Elektronik. Alter Ego put out the popular “Betty Ford” in 2000, which became one of the most memorable club hits of that year. In 2004, they released their album “Transphormed,” along with the single “Rocker.” This single was to become the biggest success story in the history of Alter Ego, evidenced by a place in the English Top 30 charts. In the past eight years, no instrumental song has managed such a high entry into these all important charts in the world of pop.
The album had worldwide success, gaining rave reviews from Groove, Raveline, De:bug, and other influential magazines, and also winning the German Dance Awards for “Best Artist” and “Best Track.” The effect of “Rocker” does not confine itself only to clubs, parties, raves, etc. This little number of hysterical club music suddenly became a winner in all sorts of different scenes, a very rare event! The rest is history.
Most recently, Flügel and Wuttke released a full length album titled “Why Not?!” on Klang, and later followed it with a CD of all remixes (“What’s Next?!”) by leading producers such as Carl Craig, Tim Deluxe, Joakim, Modeselektor, Supermayer, and Tiga amongst others. Catch these legendary producers live as the fitting finale performance of the 2009 Decibel Festival.
